Chapter Twelve

Hope opened one eye slowly, adjusting to the sunlight streaming through the windows. It took her a moment for the last two days to flash across her mind. She looked over to the other couch sharply, remembering that Dean was here.

Sure enough, he was lying there, still in his jeans and T-shirt. One arm was propped behind his head and his feet were hanging off the other end of the couch. She let her gaze linger as long as it could without seeming creepy. His features were relaxed, his face covered in stubble, his hair deliciously tousled. The strong lean lines of his body were relaxed and he looked solid and warm, and for a second, she imagined what it would be like to curl herself into his body, to share that couch with him.

A warmth spread over her that had nothing to do with the handknit throw she was lying under. The distinct memory of what it felt like to be held by him was still imprinted. Maybe that was why she’d slept so soundly. He’d made her feel safe and loved and for one night, she had loosened her unyielding grip on the world. When Sadie had been discharged, he’d come home with them and stayed. She’d trusted him with her daughter, with her world. She hadn’t done that with anyone.

She’d be lying if she said she didn’t want more. She wanted all of him. She wanted to kiss him, to be held by him again, and she wanted his heart. She wanted him to open up to her and trust her with those layers she sensed simmering beneath the surface. She wanted to hear him whisper her name again, because no one said her name the way he did. She wanted to feel his rough hands on her face, her body. And if she were really wishing, she’d wish for the whole deal.

But that would be scary because whenever something went too well for her, it would be followed by problems. And she’d rather have Dean as her friend than lose him completely. Sadie would be heartbroken if he wasn’t around anymore…and so would she. Seeing him had become one of the best parts of her day, and jeopardizing this new happiness she’d found wasn’t an option.

“I feel like I’m under a blaring light in a police interrogation room.” Dean’s raspy, deep voice, laden with laughter, snapped her eyes up the length of his body to meet his sparkling gaze.

Hope jumped off the couch before he could see how red her face was. “I’ll brew some coffee and check on Sadie. Given that it’s almost ten, I think it’s a good sign she finally turned the corner.”

“That is good news. And coffee sounds great.”

He stretched, raising one arm and folding it behind his head, the motion sending his shirt up, revealing tight abs with a smattering of dark hair. She turned away sharply, fumbling with the coffee canister and almost dropping it. What was wrong with her? It’s not like he was the only man she’d ever been around.
